Film / Movies

I love film. I specifically love artistic film, especially in the horror genre. Some of the writers / directors I particularly admire are Dario Argento, George Romero, David Lynch, Peter Jackson, Terry Gilliam, and Alejandro Jodorowsky, each for their own different reasons.

It's my hope that eventually, when I am able to work on my films, that I can take inspiration from them, and my work will at least come close to the sheer brilliance that they have shown throughout their careers. (I should note that not all of the films of the above directors have been completely to my taste, but for the most part -- I'm hooked!)

Since I'm not one to re-invent the wheel - Following are links to pages that are great resources regarding these directors.

Dario Argento

Dario Argento is an Italian Film Director with several films under his belt, my favorite being Suspiria. I truly love the way he uses color in his films. Entire rooms turned various colors using light and colored filters - giving the perfect mood to the scene. He also tends to have excellent stories, and (usually) outstanding music, especially the movies that have Goblin on the soundtrack. Check him out if you haven't already. Visit Darkdreams - a UK based fan built site for more information regarding Dario Argento. Or you can visit the Official Dario Argento Site But when I tried it the opening screen played but the link to the inside was broken. (Because of that I don't even know if it's in Italian or English.)

George Romero

You probably know George Romero's work even if you don't know the Director. George Romero is best known for the Living Dead Trilogy, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. Night of the Living Dead is a classic, But Dawn of the Dead is probably one of the - if not the greatest Zombie film ever made. The Homepage of the Dead is a great site dealing with the Dead Trilogy.

David Lynch

David Lynch is a director of Short films, Full length motion pictures, and television series. He has directed such films as the Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, and Lost Highway. His series "Twin Peaks" has a steady cult following and has some of the most disturbing scenes that I have ever seen created. And surprisingly it was made for television. David Lynch's use of sound and overall visual style is nothing short of amazing. Keep an eye on www.davidlynch.com the official web site which is currently under development. Meanwhile you can check out the The City of Absurdity a great site for David Lynch information. (Note: I had heard that Fire Walks with Me and the Series was supposed to come out on DVD in 2000 - but nothing ever came of it -- hopefully it'll be soon!)

Peter Jackson

Peter Jackson has directed several films which include Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles (The most deranged movie starring puppets that you will ever have the pleasure to watch.), Brain Dead (Released in the US as Dead Alive, A Hilarious but VERY bloody Zombie movie.), Heavenly Creatures, Forgotten Silver, The Frighteners, and the upcoming Lord of the Rings. I think it's his very seriously sick and twisted sense of humor that has him listed here as one of my favorites. Visit The Bastards have Landed the official Peter Jackson Fan Site.

Terry Gilliam

A once Member / Animator of Monty Python turned Director. Terry Gilliam's work has an individual style that doesn't quite compare to anyone else. A Gilliam film seems dark, and big and while very serious they all seem to have a swift and satirical sense of humor. Some of my favorite Gilliam films are Brazil and 12 Monkeys. Visit Dreams: The Terry Gilliam Fanzine for current Terry Gilliam information. Also check out The Terry Gilliam Files for more information regarding his past work.

Alejandro Jodorowsky

How can one describe the work of Alejandro Jodorowsky in a few lines. He is an artist that has to be seen for yourself to understand. His work is both Beautiful, and unsettling When I saw Santa Sangre for the first time, (also my first experience with Jodorowsky), I didn't know what to think. It was sad - and disturbing. It kept me guessing as to what was the reality in the film. And not once did my interest slip away. I had to watch it again shortly after. His work is amazing. You owe it to yourself to look for it! Visit The Symbol Grows: Alejandro Jodorowsky to learn more about this amazing man and his art.
